Fun ways I’ve framed bathroom mirrors with DIY flair:
Wooden picture frame motif. I made a bold statement by framing a mirror in a chunky, ornate wooden picture frame I spray painted black.
Rope detail. I hot glued rope to the edges of a plain mirror and coated it with polyurethane. The texture adds organic interest.
Luxe gold leaf edges. Painting the mirror perimeter with gold leaf paint replicates the look of expensive beveled antique mirrors.
Natural driftwood surround. Collected driftwood pieces arranged around a round mirror gave it a beachy, spa-like vibe.
Framed family photos. I used individual photo frames to create a mosaic frame effect around my mirror. Personal and meaningful.
Bold wallpaper frame. I cut out wallpaper in a funky print and adhered it to foamcore for an instant frame effect.
Gilded mosaic tile. I framed a mirror in affordable mosaic tile spray painted gold for an elegant designer touch. Stencils added extra flair.
Adding Lighting Around Bathroom Mirrors
How I’ve added lighting around bathroom mirrors for the perfect glow:
Hollywood bulb vanity lights. I installed an old-school vanity light fixture with bright bulbs on each side of the mirror. Classic and glamorous.
Custom LED strip lighting. I adhered to LED light strips around the mirror perimeter and connected to a remote control. Adds a cool modern vibe.
Sconces for mood lighting. Wall sconces with soft white bulbs mounted on both sides illuminate beautifully for tasks like makeup application.
Frame with miniature lights. I lined a mirror frame with mini string lights for a whimsical lit border effect. Sets a fun mood.
Backlit mirror. I used an LED light strip kit to backlight a two-way mirror, creating a soothing glow great for ambient lighting.
Wired pendant lights. Hanging polished metal dome pendants wired on either side supplied both task and accent lighting at the vanity.
Battery-powered puck lights. Adhesive puck lights stick onto the mirror edges without wiring. Convenient for rentals or temporary lighting.
Incorporating Storage with Bathroom Mirrors
As part of my recent bathroom remodel, I really wanted to add functional storage without sacrificing style. That’s why I opted for a creative mirror design that allowed me to add hidden compartments.
Rather than a basic flat mirror above the vanity, I chose an arched mirror with a frame. This gave me the opportunity to create a recessed cabinet area behind it. I worked with my contractor to build out the framing to allow for ample storage space.
We added a sturdy shelf unit inside the frame with two shelves. This created perfect narrow compartments to neatly store all my bathroom toiletries and “get ready” items. I can easily access everything while standing at the vanity.
The items are concealed behind the mirror, keeping the look clean and clutter-free. But the storage is invaluable. All my daily go-to products like makeup, skincare, hair products, and medications are discretely housed within arm’s reach.
We outfitted the interior shelves with discreet lighting as well. This illuminates the compartments for easy viewing and access without having to open up the area.
Incorporating hidden storage with my bathroom mirror was one of my favorite design choices. Not only is it functional, but it maintains the clean aesthetic I wanted in my contemporary-style bath. The result is both beautiful and practical.
Bathroom Mirror Installation Tips
When the time came to install the mirrors in my new bathroom, I wanted to make sure I did it properly for safety and security. With the right process, I was able to get them up securely on the wall myself.
The first step was selecting the appropriate hardware. For a heavy-framed mirror, I used sturdy screwing brackets. For lighter floating mirrors, adhesive mirror mounts worked well.
Proper placement was important for both function and symmetrical aesthetics. I measured and leveled the walls to determine the optimal mirror height and location.
Preparing the wall surface thoroughly helped create a solid bond. I removed any old adhesive or debris and cleaned it with alcohol before installing new hardware.
For screw-in brackets, I used a stud finder to mark locations directly into wall studs. This provided the most secure support. I pre-drilled holes to avoid cracking drywall.
When it came time for hanging, I recruited an extra pair of hands. Lifting the mirrors into place while aligning the mounting hardware went much smoother with assistance.
Once hung, I checked that the mirrors were completely level and made any necessary adjustments. I also confirmed the hardware felt tightly affixed for safety.
Taking my time with precise measuring, proper mounting, and using help ensured my bathroom mirrors would stay firmly and beautifully in place for years to come.
